Bronwyn Green

The Corner of Quirky & Kinky

I. Can’t. Wait. For. Summer. Break.

It’s been field trip and school project-o-ramma time here at the Green household.

Two weeks ago Killian and the eighth graders took a field trip to Notre Dame.

Last week he and 75 other 13 and 14 year-olds went to Washington DC for a week.

This week, Corwin had Medieval Day at school. He had to create a character from the middle ages, write a monologue about his life, memorize it, come up with a costume and props and perform it. Guess what we did all week? On the morning of the performance, my mom and I did a drop spindle spinning demonstration for all 75 fourth graders (she was the spinner, I just Vanna-ed stuff.)

After all the performances were finished, about 12 other moms and I set up a medieval feast for all of the kids and the principal and vice principal who dressed up as the Lord and Lady of the castle. There were fruits and vegetables of course, almond pudding and of course bread trenchers filled with stew. After the kids ate, they danced and performed little skits for the Lord and Lady. It was adorable! And exhausting – at least for the moms anyway!

Next week the eighth graders are going to Little Mexico (and awesome restaurant) where they’ll be practicing their Spanish language skills. I’ll be going along on that field trip, but I’ll be skipping the one two days later to the ballpark to see a baseball game. So not my thing.

Eight and a half more days of school. And a book to finish before school ends.

I got some exciting news recently.

First off, the lovely Anny Cook awarded me the Blogging with a Purpose award! Thanks Anny! Now I have to pick five blogs to award.

Secondly, the anthology, Camouflaged Hearts, is going to print and will be available on Amazon and in bookstores!!! Squeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
And lastly I got a fabulous review for I Put a Spell on You from Romance Junkies!!!
Here’s an excerpt:

I PUT A SPELL ON YOU is scorching hot, hilarious and full of fun. The witty banter, sweltering sensuality and irresistible characters make this novel a keeper and one that readers will not forget soon. This sizzling romance is not to be missed! I PUT A SPELL ON YOU is at the top of my ‘recommended read’ list.

And the link if you want to read the whole thing.

I thought long and hard about blogging about this topic but I decided that enough people read this blog that it might make a difference to a family somewhere.

A few weeks ago, the only child of some people we know strangled on her swing in their backyard and has spent the last few weeks in a coma. This past Friday she died. Understandably, her parents are beside themselves with grief. She was only five years old.

I mention this not to horrify you, but because this is the kind of thing that can truly happen to anyone. This beautiful, vibrant little girl was adored by her parents. She wasn’t neglected – her mom was even outside at the time of the accident.

Like I mentioned earlier, I’d considered not blogging about this, but since she died, I’ve been having recurring nightmares were every child I know strangles to death on a swing. Every night, all night long one child after another. In the last few dreams, I saw a VW microbus, so I figured I should go ahead and post this warning.

So if you have kids, grandkids, nieces or nephews, students or neighbor kids please remind them every day – every five minutes if you have to – not to twist on their swings. Yes, it’s fun. I remember doing it is a kid, but it’s not safe. Please warn the children in your life, protect them, help prevent another family from suffering this kind of pain and desolation.

After dropping my kids off at school, I took the long way home through orchard country. It was one of those damp, misty mornings that I like so much and I noticed how much spring – in the country, at least – looks like an Impressionistic painting.

All the barely opened leaves that look like tiny fists unfolding, and the grey sky that peeks through the not-quite-opened leaves and branches reminded me of virtually every Impressionistic landscape I’ve ever seen. Now, I’ll admit, I’m not terribly fond of that style of art, but in nature, it’s astonishing.

My favorite flowers come up in the Spring – daffodils, violets, grape hyacinths, myrtle, lilacs, lilies of the valley. Unfortunately the lilacs and the lilies of the valley haven’t fully bloomed yet, but here are some pictures from my yard of the others. We don’t have a garden or anything due to our appalling lack of Yard Morals, but I do enjoy the flowers when they come up.

What an insane weekend – I think I need another weekend just to recover.

Friday: I spent the majority of the day with 75 eighth graders, their parents and sibs watching their production of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, which was awesome, btw. Then I had to get Killian ready for a boyscout overnight camping trip.

Saturday: Hubby and I had to clean out his mom’s house with his brother and five of his six sisters. It was nightmarish and we’re no where near done. There are four generations of his family’s stuff in that house!

During the purging, I broke my favorite sandal and it’s irreparable. Five stores later and way more than I wanted to pay I had a new pair of sandals. Why is it that the shoe manufacturers think all women want to wear high heels. WTF is that all about???

Saturday night, the kids and I went to hang out with my brother and his kids were were in town to celebrate my nephew’s birthday.

Sunday: Took Killian to a boyscout flag retirement ceremony. (Discreetly ogled the hot fire fighters who were standing by. It’s research, people…research.)

Then it was off to my mom’s for my nephew’s birthday party and somehow I volunteered to make the belts, vests and bras for my sister-in-law and niece’s belly dancing costumes. LOL…yeah, I know I said I wouldn’t be sewing for a long time after the RT costumes, but I guess I can’t resist a good costume.

In the meanwhile, I’ve got to get writing. Gotta finish my story for the Legend anthology!

Why? Because according to my friends, I’m a giant hippie, but I like to think of it as being ecologically minded.

I’ve always recycled (thanks, mom) but this year I’m going to make an even bigger effort in the green department. For instance, I’m going to sew fabric grocery bags and keep them in the car at all times…and then remember to bring them into the store with me. I feel a little guilty, because I should have done it forever ago, but better late than never.
So, do you recycle? Use eco-friendly products? Or just don’t care?

Brynn and I got in at about 11 pm last night. I was thrilled to be home despite missing my RT friends, but the first thing I noticed after hugging hubby and the kids was that Gaea, one of my kitties, wasn’t looking good at all.

We brought her to the vet today and after several hours of tests, we had to put her down. She’d gone into kidney failure. Though she was sixteen, she’d always been in good health, so I really didn’t expect that this would be the outcome. My kids are (obviously) upset and the other kitties have started wandering around crying for her.

I promise I’ll blog more about RT and post pictures as soon as I can figure out how to download them, but I just wasn’t up for it today.

Well, in typical Bronwyn fashion, I managed to injure myself yesterday. Chuck Norris may be able to slam a revolving door, but Bronwyn Green cannot. Needless to say, my big toe and second toe are horribly bruised and swollen. Yes…I am amazing. Sigh…

I don’t know if I’ve mentioned it, but this hotel sucks out loud. I feel like we’re trying to vacation in a demilitarized zone. Wires hanging from the ceiling, plaster dust everywhere, elevators that work poorly if at all – at least I have a bathroom sink, though. There’s one poor woman who just has a hole in her counter top. Also, the staff seems completely unprepared for a conference of this size. Here’s hoping next year’s is much better.

Last night was the Faery Ball. There were so many great costumes there. I think my favorite was the woman who dressed as Ursula from The Little Mermaid – she did an awesome job. Of course, Brynn Paulin and Jennifer Armintrout were freaking fantastic too. If only I had a USB cable I could show you, but I forgot to bring it. I’ll get all the pictures downloaded as soon as I get home and post them.

As much fun as I’m having, I’m also ready to go home. I miss the kids, the hubby and the cats – not to mention sleeping in my own bed. But at the same time, I hate to leave all of the great people I’m hanging out with here.

Tonight is the Vampire Ball. I can’t wait to see what insanity ensues!

It’s a whole ‘nother world here in Pittsburgh, but I’m having a great time. What I’ve seen of the city is really cool. We’ve been shopping in Station Square, out to eat in several nifty little restaurants and I’ve met scads of authors, publishers, readers and cover models. (Margaret, I’ve got the scoop on the guy you think is hot. We must talk!)

I’ve met so many wonderful people – Claire from Total-e-bound is absolutely delightful with a wicked, wicked sense of humor. Kelly Kirch is just as hilarious and sweet as I knew she would be. Anny Cook is an absolute doll and her House Hunk is pretty fantastic, too. Judith Rochelle is an amazing bundle of energy and wisdom and Kaener Langford is an adorable wild woman. I also met Barbara Vey of Publishers Weekly. She’s so much fun and seriously, this woman has the best toys. No…not those kind! Honestly, people…

Anyway, I had my first book signing last night – well, cover flat signing, really, but it was still exciting. I was nervous as hell, But fellow EC author Tilly Greene kept me company…and kept me from freaking out. She is so sweet and insightful and I really appreciate her kindness and advice. In addition to the signing, last night was also the Ellora’s Cave party. Because of my dress, I was forced to break my nineteen year pantyhose free streak. I was bitter. I became more bitter still when I realized I’d be forced to also wear heels. Stupid dress.

I had to do the stage walk with one of the Caveman cover models. Silly me, I was so nervous about a big public introduction, I can’t even remember which model escorted me. He was really nice though and didn’t even flinch when I mentioned that I might throw up on him – lol.

Tonight is the Under the Sea Fairy Ball – I’ll try to have a report tomorrow and hopefully pictures too!
