Sometimes, love means making absolutely disgusting food.

Back when my husband, Matt, and I were dating, he used to come with me to visit my grandmother. On Sundays, she’d make a big family dinner, and whoever was in town would show up and eat together and then usually nap while overly loud sportsball games played in the background.

Once my grandma discovered how much Matt loved her jello salad, (orange jello with shredded carrots and pineapple) she made sure to make it if she knew he was going to be there. Just like she always made sure there was homemade apple sauce on the table if she knew my youngest stepbrother was going to be there.

While going through my uncle’s belongings, we’ve been doing a lot of reminiscing, and Matt mentioned really missing Grandma Allen’s jello salad. Today is my husband’s birthday, so I made him a ginormous vat of one of the most horrific desserts of all time. Because love.

It’s showti— I mean, it’s sweater weather time! And this is one of my favorite sweaters. The mama made it for my little brother, @kilted_kher_heb, but he got too beefy and muscle-y to wear it, so now it’s mine. It’s entirely too big for me, but I love it. It’s so toasty and warm.

It’s also drink-tea-all-day in my very favorite chunky mug.

Hubris, thy name is Bronwyn.

Remember a few years ago when all the parents were bitching about having the Baby Shark song stuck on repeat in their heads? I remember thinking (somewhat smugly) to myself that at least my children were well beyond the Baby Shark stage, and I wouldn’t have to suffer the theme song living rent free in my brain.

After all, to this day, I still hear (and sometimes sing aloud) the Blue’s Clues mail song if I happen to hear or see our mail being delivered. (Sing it with me millennials and parents of millennials.)

🎵🎶 Here’s the mail, it never fails, it makes me want to wag my tail, when it comes, I want to wail, MAAAAAAIIIIIIIIILLLLLL 🎶🎵

I was so determined to avoid getting another kids’ show song stuck in my head, I avoided listening to it even once. I had no idea what Baby Shark sounded like, and I was delighted by my lack of knowledge.

Fast forward to last Friday afternoon, and after several episodes of Ted Lasso, I’m wandering around the house singing, “Jamie Tarrt, doo doo doo, etc.” And then my son, Corwin, looked at me with his head cocked to the side in apparent confusion.

Corwin: Why are you singing the Baby Shark song?

Me: *blood runs cold* Excuse me, what?

Corwin: You were singing the Baby Shark song.

Me: No, I was singing the Jamie Tarrt song. From Ted Lasso.

Corwin: *shakes head while fighting a grin* Mama…Jamie Tarrt…? Baby Shark…?

Me: *silently counts out the beats of both phrases* Goddammit!
