The Corner of Quirky & Kinky

Last week, was our fourth annual writers retreat where we travel to the wild’s of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula a.k.a. The Land of No Internet and Very Little Cell Coverage. On our way to the Mackinac Bridge, this happened and we all had a terrifying exciting time getting across the highway to the median. I am, however, proud of myself for not freaking the fuck out until after I stopped the car. There might have been a little shaking and whimpering at that point. And thankfully, Kellie has Triple A, so we were able to get the tire changed and on our way in about an hour.

The drive was a blast, there were sing alongs, and we saw a double rainbow over Lake Superior when we stopped for a potty break just outside of Houghton. It’s hard to see the second one in the picture, but it was there.

We laughed a lot, wrote a lot, some of us may have had too much adult apple juice one night. See also: Irish cream and Malibu rum. We got bitten by mosquitos, wrote and laughed some more. And we ate Monk Muffins. Glorious, glorious Monk Muffins. And Monk Loaf. There’s a sect of Orthodox monks who run a little bakery called The Jampot, and they make the most amazing muffins, breads, candies, jams, and jellies. The monk pictured is our favorite. He’s adorable and hilarious.

We enjoyed the view – this is what we woke up to every day.

There was another double rainbow the night before the SCOTUS ruling on marriage equality came down. A sign? I think so. After all, we were staying in a town named Gay.

And upon hearing the news, we celebrated appropriately while being eaten alive by mosquitoes.

We also found some art. This abandoned smoke stack has been here forever, but someone added some awesome crows to it.

Oh! And we went to Camelot for more yarn! Here’s mine!

In between writing sprints, there were also coloring breaks. Here’s the one I finished from my Color Me Calm coloring book.

There was some bad news…some people couldn’t make it up there this year, and one of the few texts I was able to receive was about the cancelation of Hannibal. *weeps bitter tears* Jess and I ate our feelings and this is how Jen handled the news.

But all in all, the trip was amazing and fabulous, and I can’t wait until next year! Nothing inspires me more than hanging with these amazing women and spending time in my happy place. Life is good, and I have the best job and the best friends in the world.

Sounds like an amazing trip in spite of the flat tire and the mosquitoes. Love the pictures. Thank you for sharing them.

Wow, I’m impressed you kept the car under control and stayed calm! Go, you!

Also, two double rainbows?! That’s amazing. And definitely that second one was a sign. 🙂

LOL – I was impressed, too – especially since it was Jen’s SUV not my little Squishy. 🙂 I couldn’t believe we saw two doubles – they were so gorgeous.
